I have a kid at Rocky Mountain, who plays Borah this week. For the life of me, I can't figure out why Rocky plays Borah. What criteria are used by Southern Idaho conference to match up opponents for this week's games? I figured out that there are divisions and the two teams with the best records in their respective divisions (Meridian and Eagle) play for the conference championship. But I would love to understand how the other matchups are determined and what impact the outcomes of those games have on anything. If I sound dumb, forgive me because I grew up in a 2A conference that didn't have this 5A setup.

Winners of each 5A SIC Division play each other, like you mention. 2nd place division teams play the 5th place team in the opposite division, 3rd place teams play the 4th place team in the other. Winners of each game get an automatic state berth, losers are still eligible for a wild card (ie. 3rd place Foothills Division Middleton lost to 4th place River division Kuna, but Middleton still got the #1 at-large spot in the playoffs).
